Substation Community Supporters, Inc. is a non-profit established exclusively to support (1) the historic preservation of the substation building and (2) public-facing arts and cultural programming in the space. It carries forth the long-running community effort to make the substation building the hub so many have wished for it to be. The non-profit works to cover the unavoidable gap between the cost of its mission objectives and what the privately owned entity can provide on its own.

The cost of preservation and operating of an historic icon as well as the cost of offering arts and cultural programming is very high in the area. This helps ensure that the building’s public benefits are secure and that it is more broadly available to community interests. The organization secures funding to preserve the structure’s historic character as well as to make arts and cultural programming affordable to artists and community members in the Greater Boston area, particularly those in the BIPOC/ALAANA and LGBTQ communities who have historically had limited access to such venues. SCS also intends to sponsor its own programming as its budget permits.

Grant Funding

To date the organization has applied for and received the following grants (for which it is enormously grateful):

City of Boston Wake Up the Night Grant for A Haunted Circus performance and Halloween dance party.

George B. Henderson Foundation for funding of Substation Control Panel manipulable steampunk art installation by Martin and Michael Ulman.

City of Boston Community Preservation Grant for critical exterior weather tightening and restoration work, as well as restoration of the historic weathervane.
