3D Art Exhibition: Rebirth and Reimagine

ABOUT

Rebirth/Reimagine is the first 3D artistic exhibition at The Substation, perhaps the first in Roslindale Village. Learn more about the artwork here.

The exhibition utilizes the grandeur of this building to express a new vision and showcase skilled artists from a range of mediums and artistic practices. People frequently reimagine their lives and rebirth parts of themselves, yet we rarely see visual representations of this journey. Our hope is that visitors find work that draws them in and inspires wonder, encouraging them to reflect on this new stage of our community and ourselves.

Thank you to Abigail Ogilvy Gallery, Substation Community Supporters Inc., and Mass Cultural Council for their financial support to make this exhibition possible, and to judges and curators Gena Mavuli, Alison Croney Moses, and Venetia Dale.

Exhibition open to public Monday to Friday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

*During the Beer Hall hours, the exhibition will be opened!

BACKGROUND

For 46 years The Substation building was boarded up and dark. Then, in 2017, the building underwent its own major rebirthing, just over a century after it was built for the Boston Elevated Railway (BERy) to convert AC to DC electricity. Now, The Substation is a new multi-use community convening spot and coworking space. With the recent launch of Substation Community Supporters, a nonprofit complement to The Substation business, this exhibition is one of many ways The Substation is meeting its goals of hosting unique, artistic, and inspired events for the community.

This show was conceived at a time when things were shifting in a notable way. Planning for this exhibition began in January 2024 between local business owners Gena Mavuli (Create) and Laura Charles and Adam Rogoff (The Substation) to highlight the creative energy of the neighborhood. In the spring of 2024, local artists Alison Croney Moses and Venetia Dale joined and the team began to craft a show that highlights diverse local talent and the broad vision of artists in our area.

We invite you to our closing reception and panel discussion on October 26 from 1 – 3pm. Several of the artists will discuss their artworks’ relationship to the theme of rebirth and reimagining. The conversation will be moderated by Meg Rotzel, one of the participating artists.
