In December 2015, in Roxbury, Massachusetts, Hella Black Trivia was born.

We provide a genuine Black game that’s inclusive of everyone, with atmosphere that’s fun no matter your background. We do it with love, which is why we say that Hella Black Trivia is trivia with seasoning.

Empty Bowls
Mar

3:00 PM15:00

Empty Bowls

Empty Bowls is a global fundraising movement started in 1990 started by, of course, a teacher. The concept is simple:

Pottery studios make and donate the hand-made bowls, restaurants donate the soup. Local organizations who receive the proceeds work on (unending) logistics and details behind putting the event together. The community comes together, buys tickets, takes a piece of functional art (bowls!) home, eats some great local food- all for the benefit of the chosen nonprofits.

In Roslindale, this annual event is a collaboration between Create, NFAC, and The Substation. It embodies everything we’re about: craft, community, being a source of goodness in our community. We are thrilled to join together with NFAC (details below) to support food access in Roslindale and Hyde Park. In our partnership’s first year of Empty Bowls in 2022, we served a sold-out crowd 300 people and raised much-needed funds. In 2025, we’re aiming even higher.

Our next event will be held March 23, 2025 at The Substation in Roslindale Village! The bowls are already underway at Create, restaurants are signing on, and logistics are going strong! Tickets are on sale now. Click here!

More about NFAC: Proceeds benefit the member organizations of the Roslindale/Hyde Park Neighborhood Food Action Collaborative (NFAC): Food Access Volunteers of Roslindale (FAVOR), the Roslindale Food Collective (RFC) & the Hyde Park Food Pop-Up. NFAC aims to continue to build, facilitate & coordinate a network of community members & organizations focused on increasing access, choice, & affordability to healthy food to improve overall community health.

Funds raised will go directly towards providing fresh culturally appropriate fruit & vegetables to our community members!

Wine Tasting with Rick Messier

Wine Tasting with Rick Messier

The Substation has become known for its great taste in beer. We're excited to have expanded our menu into wine and cocktails now, too! Our wine list has been thoughtfully curated with Hyde Park-based Areni Selections, a wine importer and distributor committed to seeking out talented winemakers across Europe and developing personal connections with each family and grower. We want to introduce you to our new wine menu through a tasting of all 7 wines on the list.

Led by Areni Selections founder, and Roslindale neighbor, Rick Messier, you'll journey through the tastes and stories of each bottle we now feature at The Substation. Get tickets here!

About Rick:

Rick Messier’s journey to founding Areni Selections is rooted in his passion for the people and stories behind every bottle of wine. His connection to wine began in restaurants, particularly during his time at No. 9 Park, where the wine director’s enthusiasm sparked his interest in the intricate histories, farming methods, and personalities that give wine its unique character.

Rick’s talent for storytelling became evident during his years in the import and distribution market, where he engaged wine professionals in Boston and beyond. Through Areni Selections, he now brings this passion directly to wine enthusiasts, bridging the gap between the everyday drinker—whether a beginner or an experienced connoisseur—and the winemakers, farmers, and families whose work makes wine so special.
